On January 21, Ding Xuexiang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, took a question on how to improve global governance and China’s role in preventing a divided world after addressing the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2025 in Davos.
Vice Premier Ding noted that as a Chinese saying goes, “What a person says and does tell you what that person is.” Any fair-minded person, after looking at what China has said and done, would come to the conclusion that China is a responsible major country and a staunch defender and builder of the international order.
Vice Premier Ding underscored that China is actively offering proposals on global governance. In recent years, President Xi Jinping has put forward the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative, providing important guidance for the world to narrow differences and strengthen solidarity. China is committed to the path of peaceful development. In international affairs, China always champions dialogue and partnership rather than confrontation and alliance. Among the world’s major countries, China has the best track record with respect to peace and security. China has all along firmly supported true multilateralism, and firmly upheld the international system with the U.N. at its core and the international order based on international law. The Chinese people always put actions behind their words and honor every promise they make.
Vice Premier Ding pointed out that if the world becomes divided, humanity would not only struggle to tackle common challenges, but may also relapse into confrontation and even war. The consequences would be unimaginable, and no country can stay immune or remain unaffected. All countries on Planet Earth are like passengers in the same ship. They share the same future and therefore need to navigate challenges together with global solidarity. To this end, the international community must come together, firmly oppose the Cold War mentality and zero-sum game, jointly build a community with a shared future for mankind, and make the international order more just and equitable. In this process, major countries must lead by example and act in a way befitting their stature. The 1.4 billion-plus Chinese people aspire for peace and tranquility, and hope to see a world where all countries work together in solidarity for common development. We will work tirelessly toward this end and hope the rest of the world will join us in this endeavor.
