Dalian is positioning itself as a global hub for green ship construction, marine equipment manufacturing, repairs, and retrofitting, amid China’s booming shipbuilding sector.
The northeastern port city in Liaoning province has set an ambitious goal of surpassing an industrial scale of 100 billion yuan ($13.83 billion) by 2027.
In the Dalian Changxing Island Economic and Technological Development Zone, Hengli Heavy Industries has quickly established itself as a key player in ship manufacturing.
Earlier this year, the company achieved a milestone by delivering two 82,000-deadweight-ton bulk carriers in a single day – a first since it commenced full-scale operations in 2023.
Last year, Hengli Heavy Industries marked several achievements, including its first ship and engine deliveries and the launch of its first 306,000-metric-ton very large crude carrier (VLCC).
According to Hengli Group Chairman Chen Jianhua, the company’s shipbuilding orders are booked until 2028. Hengli Heavy Industries is focused on designing and producing high-value, environmentally friendly ships with top-tier efficiency and speed.
Once fully operational, the company is expected to process 2.3 million tons of steel plates annually, construct 150 large ships, and manufacture 180 engines, making it the world’s largest single shipyard.
