Chinese wisdom in carbon finance shared for closer South-South cooperation during a seminar conducted by the Department of Climate Change of China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment.
The Belt and Road Capacity-Building Seminar on Financing Mechanisms and Carbon Finance, organized by the Department of Climate Change of China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment, recently concluded in Guangzhou. During the event, China shared its climate finance expertise and resources with 21 officials and professionals from 13 countries, including Pakistan, Indonesia, Brazil, Laos, Cambodia, and Honduras.
Chen Zhihua, Deputy Director of the National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation, highlighted that developed nations are expected, under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement, to provide financial and technical aid to developing countries for addressing climate challenges.
However, he noted that developed countries have yet to meet their commitment of $100 billion annually for climate finance. In light of this gap, the seminar on climate finance demonstrates China’s active efforts in promoting South-South cooperation to combat climate change.
Lectures during Seminar
The seminar provided lectures and hands-on sessions on various topics, including climate change, artificial intelligence, energy transitions, carbon neutrality, the low-altitude economy, smart transportation, carbon market development, green finance, and carbon finance.
Chen Zhihua further mentioned that China has signed 53 memorandums of understanding related to South-South climate change cooperation with 42 developing nations, focusing on creating low-carbon demonstration zones and launching mitigation and adaptation projects. Additionally, more than 2,600 climate change officials and professionals from over 120 countries have participated in China-hosted training programs.
