Chinese, Turkish FMs pledge to enhance bilateral cooperation during their discussion on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, on Thursday, where both officials reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation. Their discussion took place on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Johannesburg. Wang also serves as a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

During the talks, Wang highlighted that both China and Türkiye belong to the Global South and are progressing in industrialization, creating substantial opportunities for practical collaboration. He emphasized that China values its relationship with Türkiye and considers it an integral part of its Middle East diplomacy. China seeks to enhance coordination, align development strategies, broaden cooperation fields, and generate mutual benefits for both nations and the broader region.

Wang also expressed gratitude to Türkiye for assisting in the recent evacuation of Chinese citizens from Syria. He stressed that combating terrorism in all its forms aligns with the shared interests of both countries and is a widely accepted principle in the global community. China remains open to strengthening counter-terrorism cooperation with Türkiye to ensure regional and international peace and stability.

For his part, Fidan acknowledged that China and Türkiye have fostered strong ties across various sectors in recent years. He noted that intergovernmental cooperation meetings have been successful, with smooth alignment between Türkiye’s Middle Corridor initiative and China’s Belt and Road Initiative. China has also become Türkiye’s second-largest trading partner.

Fidan further stated that Türkiye is eager to boost trade and investment with China and explore collaboration in emerging fields such as renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and information technology. Additionally, he emphasized Türkiye’s willingness to continue cooperation in counterterrorism, law enforcement, and security matters at both bilateral and multilateral levels.

Both leaders also discussed regional issues, with Türkiye expressing appreciation for China’s balanced stance on global conflicts, including the Ukraine crisis and the Palestinian issue. Fidan voiced Türkiye’s support for the six-point consensus jointly proposed by China and Brazil and reaffirmed that the two-state solution remains essential. He welcomed China’s ongoing efforts to enhance its relations with regional nations.
