Chinese Special Envoy meets Pak Foreign Secretary to discuss relations with Afghanistan and regional stability.
Chinese Special Envoy on Afghan Affairs, Ambassador Yue Xiaoyong, currently on a visit to Pakistan, met with Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch on Monday. He also held in-depth discussions with Additional Foreign Secretary for Afghanistan and West Asia, Ambassador Ahmad Naseem Warraich. The Foreign Office reported that both sides exchanged views on Afghanistan’s relations, reaffirming the crucial role of neighboring countries in ensuring a peaceful and stable Afghanistan. While the Foreign Office did not provide specific details of the talks, concerns over terrorism threats emanating from Afghanistan were a key topic.
Pakistan and China have both emphasized the need for Afghanistan to address both the immediate and root causes of terrorism and to work towards eradicating it swiftly. During the Moscow Format talks earlier this month, both countries expressed alarm over the presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan, highlighting their ongoing threat to global security. They called on the Taliban to take clear and verifiable actions to fulfill international obligations in combating terrorism and preventing Afghanistan from being used as a base for attacks on other countries.
In an interview with the Beijing Club before his trip to Islamabad, Yue acknowledged the Taliban’s control over Afghanistan, describing the group as “the reality of Afghanistan” and recognizing their authority across the country. Yue also emphasized the responsibility of Afghanistan’s neighbors and regional partners to collaborate in supporting the nation’s peace, stability, and reconstruction efforts. He further voiced concerns, shared by many nations, about the security threats posed by terrorism in a Taliban-led Afghanistan.
