Two Chinese nationals lost their lives, another was injured, and multiple Pakistani nationals were also killed or injured during a terrorist attack in Karachi, a southern port city in Pakistan, as confirmed by the Chinese embassy in Pakistan.
The attack occurred around 11:00 p.m. local time on Sunday (1800 GMT), targeting a convoy from the Port Qasim Electric Power Company near Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport. Karachi is the capital of Pakistan’s Sindh province, according to a statement from the embassy.
The Chinese Embassy and Consulate in Pakistan expressed strong condemnation of the terrorist act, extended their condolences to the victims from both countries, and offered sympathy to the injured and their families. The statement also mentioned that China is collaborating with Pakistan to handle the aftermath of the attack.
Police reported that a massive explosion on Sunday night led to a large fire, engulfing several vehicles near the Karachi airport.
Chinese diplomatic missions in Pakistan quickly launched emergency response measures, urging Pakistani authorities to provide the best possible treatment to the injured, thoroughly investigate the attack, and harshly punish those responsible.
The embassy emphasized that Pakistan must implement concrete and effective measures to safeguard Chinese citizens, institutions, and projects within the country.
The Chinese embassy and consulates in Pakistan advised Chinese nationals and companies to remain cautious, closely monitor the local security situation, enhance security protocols, and take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
The banned militant group, Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), claimed responsibility for the attack via social media, although Pakistani authorities have not yet verified this claim.
