Chinese, New Zealand musicians unite for Year of the Snake concert and the Eastern music meets the Western melodies.
Top musicians from China and New Zealand performed a blend of Chinese folk music and Western symphonies to celebrate the Year of the Snake and the cultural connection between the two nations.
The Chinese New Year concert was held in Christchurch, New Zealand’s largest South Island city, featuring the Yijing Chamber Ensemble from the Central Conservatory of Music and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.
“Music transcends boundaries, and the unique characteristics of Eastern and Western music can resonate deeply with each other,” remarked He Ying, Chinese Consul General in Christchurch, during her opening speech.
The concert combined the richness of Chinese traditional instruments such as the pipa, erhu, and bamboo flute with the sophistication of Western classical music. Organizers described it as a harmonious exchange of traditions, creating a profound dialogue between two musical cultures.
Hosted by China’s Central Conservatory of Music, the event was organized by the New Zealand Music Trust and supported by the Chinese Consulate General in Christchurch and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.
According to the Chinese lunar calendar, the Year of the Snake begins on January 29.
