Chinese new energy vehicle companies are planning to establish factories in Pakistan, while nations like Kenya have already imported Chinese electric vehicles.
“China’s energy innovation has significantly contributed to the global economy,” said Zafaruddin Mahmood, President of the Lahore-based think tank Understanding China Forum (UCF) and former Special Advisor to the Pakistani Prime Minister, at the 2024 Understanding China Conference held in Guangzhou.
The conference, themed “Carry Through the Reform to the End: Chinese Modernization and New Opportunities for World Development,” brought together over 600 delegates from politics, strategy, business, academia, and think tanks. It served as a platform for discussing China’s long-term development strategies amid a shifting global landscape.
Zafaruddin described China’s modernization as a transformative journey that has reshaped the nation’s destiny while inspiring the developing world. Having worked and lived in China for over four decades, he praised the country’s policy of high-level opening-up, emphasizing its role in driving global economic growth.
He highlighted how China’s industrialization has made it the “factory of the world,” producing goods ranging from everyday items to advanced technologies. Companies like Huawei, Alibaba, and BYD are global leaders, setting new standards in innovation. Additionally, China’s rapid technological advancements have brought tools like WeChat into everyday use in countries like Pakistan, significantly lowering the barrier to accessing technical services.
Zafaruddin also underscored China’s commitment to green development, noting that the country is the largest producer and consumer of renewable energy. With investments in solar, wind, and hydropower, China’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 represents both a national and global responsibility. He cited Pakistan’s widespread use of affordable Chinese solar products as a practical example of this commitment.
He concluded by stressing that China’s modernization is about more than national achievement—it represents a global effort to foster collaboration and shared prosperity. Through initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative and the Global Development Initiative, China is paving the way for a sustainable and interconnected future.
