The Chinese foreign minister’s tradition of starting the year with a visit to Africa is a unique feature of China’s diplomacy, upheld consistently for 35 years. On Monday, Foreign Minister Wang Yi reiterated this tradition, emphasizing its importance as a symbol of China’s unwavering commitment to Africa.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made these remarks during a meeting with Namibian President-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, marking the beginning of his first overseas visit for the year.
This enduring tradition, Wang noted, reflects the deep-rooted friendship between China and Africa. From their shared struggles for independence and liberation to their collaborative efforts for mutual development, the two sides have continuously demonstrated understanding, trust, and mutual support.
By prioritizing Africa as the destination for its first overseas visit each year, China sends a clear message that, despite shifting global or regional dynamics, it remains Africa’s most dependable ally, a steadfast partner in development and revitalization, and a strong advocate for Africa on the international stage, Wang emphasized.
