Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized on Tuesday that amid growing protectionism and anti-globalization trends, China and Switzerland, as advocates of free trade, should take concrete steps to show that economic globalization is inevitable.
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made these comments during discussions with Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
He praised the recent announcement by both countries to begin negotiations on an upgraded version of their free trade agreement.
Wang stressed the importance of both nations maintaining strong political trust, upholding mutual respect and equality, and ensuring the continued healthy development of their bilateral relationship.
Cassis, for his part, expressed Switzerland’s commitment to advancing the negotiation process and strengthening bilateral economic and trade ties.
He also reaffirmed Switzerland’s adherence to the one-China policy and its appreciation of the partnership with China.
Additionally, the two foreign ministers exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis during their talks.
