Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged BRICS countries on Tuesday to uphold fundamental principles and act as a leading force in defending global fairness and justice, especially in opposition to hegemonic actions.
Wang, who is also a member of the CPC Central Committee’s Political Bureau, made these remarks during a BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting and partner dialogue held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Chaired by Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, the session focused on enhancing collaboration among Global South countries and promoting multilateralism.
Wang highlighted that President Xi Jinping had paid a special visit the same day to the BRICS New Development Bank headquarters, demonstrating China’s strong backing for the bank. He said China hopes to see both the bank and the broader BRICS community advance along the path of modernization.
In the face of hegemonic challenges, BRICS nations should remain steadfast in their principles and act as defenders of global justice and fairness, Wang emphasized.
First, Wang stressed the importance of upholding the United Nations’ core leadership. He called on the expanded BRICS grouping to promote inclusive dialogue, fair contribution, and mutual benefit, defend the multilateral trading system, and help build a more equitable global governance structure.
Second, he urged support for peaceful dispute resolution, calling on BRICS to champion the concept of shared, cooperative, and sustainable security and commit to non-violent solutions to conflicts.
Wang added that China is ready to cooperate with other nations, particularly BRICS members, to build global consensus for a political resolution to the Ukraine conflict.
He also affirmed BRICS backing for the Arab and Islamic nations’ plan to rebuild Gaza and reiterated support for the principle that Palestinians should govern their own state.
Third, Wang advocated for fostering a cooperative and open global environment. He encouraged BRICS members to remain inclusive and assist partner countries in deeply integrating into the bloc and engaging fully in its activities.
Attending ministers agreed that given rising geopolitical tensions and increasing protectionism, it is crucial to defend multilateralism, uphold the UN Charter, and reinforce the UN’s central role in the global order.
They also raised concerns that reciprocal tariffs could disrupt global supply chains and create greater instability in the international economic environment.
