Chinese FM tells Germany not to politicize trade disputes with China calling to resolve through dialogue and consultations stressing that China and EU have benefitted from bilateral relations.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, in a meeting with his German counterpart in New York on Tuesday, urged that politicizing economic and trade matters and misusing tariffs would benefit no one. He called on Germany and the European Union (EU) to resolve trade conflicts with China through dialogue and consultations. This discussion occurred during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, as the EU plans to impose additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.
Wang emphasized that over nearly 50 years of diplomatic relations, China and the EU have benefitted from bilateral cooperation, which serves both parties’ interests and promotes global stability. He highlighted that the economic relationship between China and the EU is highly complementary, offering benefits that surpass their individual contributions. Politicizing trade issues and imposing tariffs would harm both sides and impede the global green transition.
Wang called on Germany and the EU to remain committed to open cooperation, encouraging ongoing dialogue and the preservation of international trade rules and fair competition. He also noted that the strategic plan laid out by leaders from both countries has led to strong economic and trade ties between China and Germany this year.
German companies have capitalized on China’s modernization and reforms, leading to record-high investments in China by German businesses during the first half of the year. Wang underscored the mutual benefits of China-Germany cooperation, which could foster global peace, prosperity, and stability.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock acknowledged the significance of China as Germany’s top trade partner and affirmed that bilateral cooperation spans various sectors, resulting in mutual benefits. She reiterated Germany’s commitment to the one-China policy, supporting free trade and fair competition while resolving disputes through transparent dialogue.
Baerbock also stated that as the EU’s largest single market, it is essential to keep markets open. Germany values China’s role in global affairs and is committed to fostering stronger coordination with China within multilateral institutions such as the UN, aiming to strengthen EU-China relations.
Wang reaffirmed China’s support for the UN’s central role in addressing international issues and expressed a willingness to collaborate with Germany and others to ensure the UN and the Security Council fulfill their duties in maintaining global peace and security.
The ministers also discussed the Ukraine crisis and the situation in the Middle East.
