Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a meeting in Beijing on Friday with Rafael Mariano Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Wang, who is also a member of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee Political Bureau, emphasized that in the face of increasing unilateralism, coercion, and power politics, the global community must stand united.
He cautioned that without unity, the world risks reverting to a survival-of-the-fittest mindset, where smaller and less powerful nations would suffer the most.
Wang reiterated that the founding purpose of the United Nations was to uphold a fair international order and protect the sovereign equality of nations. Therefore, it must take a clear stance and fulfill its responsibilities.
Wang highlighted the IAEA’s crucial role as part of the UN system, saying the agency is tasked with promoting international norms, ensuring the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and preventing nuclear proliferation.
He expressed China’s hope that the IAEA would continue to handle sensitive global issues—like Iran’s nuclear program, the AUKUS nuclear submarine deal, and Japan’s release of Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water—impartially, professionally, and objectively.
Grossi, in response, described China as a stabilizing presence in an unpredictable world, praising its unwavering support for the UN and its affiliated organizations.
He noted the IAEA’s strong commitment to collaboration with China and acknowledged China’s notable progress in the peaceful application of nuclear energy. Grossi also conveyed the agency’s readiness to expand cooperation with China and jointly address the Iranian nuclear matter and other significant global concerns.
