Senior Chinese diplomat Wang Yi held a strategic meeting with Sergei Shoigu, Secretary of Russia’s Security Council, in Beijing on Friday.

Wang emphasized that under the leadership of both nations’ heads of state, China-Russia relations would remain steadfast and strong.

Recently, leaders from both countries engaged in a phone discussion following a video conference at the beginning of the year, focusing on enhancing strategic coordination and ensuring global stability. Wang stated that this exchange underscored the unique and high-level nature of China-Russia relations, demonstrating the responsible leadership of both nations.

He urged both countries to fully implement the consensus reached by their leaders, maintain close communication, and continue strengthening mutual trust and cooperation in strategic security.

Wang highlighted that historical and present-day realities consistently affirm the resilience, public support, and distinct strategic value of China-Russia relations, which should remain independent of external influences.

He further noted that China-Russia ties in the modern era exemplify the strength and stability of a new model for relations between major powers.

Wang pointed out that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the United Nations, both of which hold significant historical and diplomatic importance for China-Russia relations and the international community.

As two principal victors of World War II and permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and Russia share a responsibility to uphold the post-war order and work together to promote global peace and development.

Shoigu conveyed that the leaders of both countries have charted a clear path for strengthening bilateral relations and strategic coordination. He stressed that their political and strategic mutual trust remains strong and is unaffected by external pressures.

He added that the Russia-China comprehensive strategic partnership is a deliberate choice made by both nations in pursuit of their core national interests and the well-being of their people.

Shoigu noted that Russia and China share aligned perspectives on global affairs and collaborate closely in organizations such as the UN, G20, and APEC. He expressed Russia’s full support for China’s leadership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and thanked China for backing Russia’s chairmanship of BRICS the previous year.

During the meeting, the two sides held extensive discussions on the Ukraine crisis. Shoigu provided an update on Russia’s dialogue with the U.S. and outlined Russia’s position, emphasizing its commitment to addressing the root causes of the crisis and working toward a lasting, fair, and sustainable peace.

Wang reiterated China’s dedication to playing a constructive role in facilitating peace talks and advocating for a political resolution to the Ukraine crisis.

Both sides agreed to hold another round of high-level China-Russia security discussions at an appropriate time. They also exchanged views on key international and regional issues, including the Asia-Pacific region, the Middle East, and Afghanistan.
