Chinese envoy urges U.S. to push Israel to stop military operations in Gaza while speaking at a UN Security Council briefing on the Middle East.
A Chinese envoy on Tuesday urged the United States to take “sincere and responsible actions” to press Israel to halt its military operations in Gaza and end the killing of civilians.
Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, condemned Israel’s attack on the Al-Taba’een school in Gaza City over the weekend, which killed more than 100 Palestinians. Speaking at a UN Security Council briefing on the Middle East, he emphasized that civilians and civilian infrastructure must not be targeted, calling it a red line under international humanitarian law.
Fu described repeated attacks on schools sheltering civilians as heinous acts and highlighted the urgent need for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, which he said is both a deep desire of the people of Gaza and a widely shared international consensus. He stated, “the people of Gaza desperately seek an immediate and lasting ceasefire, a call that resonates with the overwhelming consensus of the international community.”
He pointed out that two months ago, the United States claimed that Israel had accepted a ceasefire under UN Security Council Resolution 2735, but the reality has been the opposite. Fu urged Washington, as Israel’s largest arms supplier, to take meaningful and responsible actions.
With the Gaza conflict escalating and the Middle East facing increasing instability due to provocations, Fu expressed deep concern. He stressed that the key to preventing further deterioration is achieving a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire in Gaza.
China, Fu said, is committed to tirelessly working to end the conflict in Gaza, mitigate the humanitarian crisis, promote the two-state solution, and achieve lasting peace, stability, and security in the Middle East.
