Chinese envoy urges U.S. to push Israel to cease military operations in Gaza expressing alarm at the widespread deaths in Gaza.
On Monday, a Chinese envoy called on the United States to take concrete steps to urge Israel to immediately halt its military operations in Gaza. Geng Shuang, China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, emphasized the need for the U.S. to use its influence over Israel and fulfill its responsibilities in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions, allowing the Palestinian people a chance for peace.
Geng highlighted that despite widespread international appeals for a ceasefire, Israel’s military operations in Gaza have continued over the past year, resulting in the deaths of more than 41,000 Palestinian civilians. He expressed alarm at this situation.
He further pointed out that the Security Council could have taken earlier action to demand a ceasefire had the U.S. not obstructed efforts and repeatedly shielded Israel from accountability. Geng reiterated China’s support for further measures by the Council to end the conflict, alleviate the humanitarian crisis, and restore peace to the region.
