Chinese envoy urges immediate lifting of unilateral sanctions warning that these actions exacerbate economic and social challenges of the states they are imposed on.
A Chinese envoy on Wednesday urged the immediate lifting of all unilateral sanctions imposed by certain countries, condemning these actions as illegal under international law and the UN Charter. The envoy warned that these sanctions not only exacerbate the economic and social struggles of the targeted nations but also heighten the risk of new conflicts and instability.
Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, expressed these concerns during a Security Council open debate on peacebuilding and conflict prevention. He emphasized that effective conflict prevention depends on a supportive external environment, which is undermined by such sanctions.
Fu called on the UN to strengthen its support for development, particularly through peacekeeping operations and special political missions that should focus on the economic growth and sustainable development of the nations they assist. He also underscored the essential role of regional organizations in building political trust and fostering regional cooperation.
The envoy highlighted the importance of an open and non-discriminatory international economic and trade environment, which would allow developing countries to participate fairly in global economic, scientific, and technological cooperation. He also advocated for reforms in the international financial system to better address the needs of developing nations, especially in areas like development financing, climate change, and capacity building.
Fu denounced unilateralism and interference in other countries’ internal affairs, reiterating China’s opposition to hegemonic practices. He stressed that the imposition of unilateral sanctions not only deepens existing challenges but also sows the seeds for future conflicts.
Discussing the broader global situation, Fu noted the increasing instability in some regions and its spillover effects, calling for more robust conflict prevention measures that tackle both symptoms and root causes. He argued that poverty and underdevelopment are primary drivers of conflict, making poverty reduction and development crucial for achieving lasting peace.
Fu also emphasized the role of effective governance in maintaining stability and promoting sustainable development. He urged governments to actively address market deficiencies and invest in infrastructure, education, and healthcare to improve public welfare and ensure long-term stability.
Inclusive development, especially the protection of human rights for women, youth, and other vulnerable groups, is essential for laying the groundwork for lasting peace, Fu added. He highlighted China’s commitment to supporting the Global South in achieving peace and sustainable development, citing the success of initiatives like the China-UN Peace and Development Trust Fund.
One notable project under this fund is Juncao Technology, which helps farmers in 107 countries transition to higher-value-added industries such as mushroom farming and animal husbandry, addressing issues like poverty, food security, and employment. Fu commended the ongoing efforts of Professor Lin Zhanxi, the 82-year-old inventor of Juncao Technology, who continues to promote this innovation globally.
Fu concluded by reaffirming China’s willingness to collaborate with the international community to help more developing countries achieve self-sufficiency, foster peace, and lay the foundation for global stability.
