August 8 – Chinese envoy urges cooperation in fighting terrorism reiterating commitment to ensuring global peace and security.
On Thursday, a Chinese envoy urged the global community to enhance solidarity and intensify cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
“Terrorism remains a significant threat to international peace and security,” stated Geng Shuang, China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, during a UN Security Council briefing on the threats posed by terrorist acts to global stability.
Geng highlighted that the dangers posed by groups like Daesh and Al-Qaeda persist, warning that the ongoing escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is leading to an increase in hate crimes and heightening the risk of terrorist attacks in various countries. He expressed deep concern over these developments, emphasizing their disturbing nature.
Geng stressed the necessity of global cooperation in combating terrorism, cautioning that counter-terrorism efforts should not be used as tools for major power rivalry, geopolitical bargaining, or interference in other nations’ internal affairs.
He called on all nations to embrace the concept of common security, abandon ideological biases, eliminate double standards in counter-terrorism efforts, and respect the security of all countries.
Geng urged the international community to adhere to the principles of the UN Charter, practice true multilateralism, and ensure that the United Nations plays a central coordinating role in global counter-terrorism efforts.
He also called for the full implementation of UN counter-terrorism resolutions and the UN Global Counterterrorism Strategy, emphasizing the need to combat all terrorist organizations and individuals listed by the Security Council.
Geng underscored the importance of cooperation at national, regional, and global levels, stressing the need for collective counter-terrorism mechanisms and collaboration in areas such as early warning, financing, and border control, as well as thorough research on the impact of emerging technologies on the global fight against terrorism.
He highlighted the importance of prioritizing counter-terrorism efforts and optimizing resource allocation, suggesting that the UN and the international community should focus on strengthening the legislative, judicial, and law enforcement capabilities of affected countries, and enhancing their overall counter-terrorism and de-radicalization capacities.
Geng emphasized that terrorism cannot be eradicated solely through military means, and that a systematic approach focusing on long-term solutions, addressing root causes, and incorporating economic, political, social, cultural, and religious strategies is essential to ultimately achieve success in combating terrorism.
He suggested that regional countries should concentrate on eradicating poverty, improving education, employment, and the economy, while exploring development paths that align with their national conditions.
Geng called on the international community to increase development assistance, help resolve debt and financing issues, and bolster the capacities of affected countries for sustainable social and economic development.
He stressed the need for a political resolution to regional conflicts, improving humanitarian conditions in conflict zones, and preventing terrorist groups from exploiting chaos.
Geng made a special appeal for international efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, ease regional tensions, and prevent further escalation of conflicts that could result in greater casualties and disaster.
Finally, Geng reaffirmed China’s commitment to working with all parties to uphold the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security, contributing to effectively addressing the threat of global terrorism and fostering a world of lasting peace and universal security.
