Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the UN, emphasized the Council’s responsibility for global peace and security, calling for urgent measures. He stressed the need for a ceasefire in Gaza, de-escalation of the Lebanese-Israeli conflict, and efforts to prevent further violence. Fu warned that the situation is critical and delaying action could lead to serious consequences, urging major powers to play a constructive role in preventing escalation.
Fu highlighted the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing it as “hell on Earth” due to widespread destruction, civilian casualties, and mass displacement. He called for strict adherence to international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians.
He also emphasized the importance of safeguarding UN peacekeepers in Lebanon and ensuring they are not targeted in the conflict.
According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, Israeli airstrikes have killed 46 people and injured 85 in the last 24 hours, with significant damage in various regions. An airstrike in central Beirut on Thursday morning targeted a Hezbollah-affiliated health center, causing a large fire and extensive damage to nearby homes and vehicles. The escalation between Israel and Hezbollah has intensified since September 23.
