A Chinese envoy on Tuesday urged Israel to abandon its reliance on military force and immediately halt its operations in Gaza, following recent airstrikes that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians.
Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, addressed the Security Council, expressing deep regret over the collapse of the hard-earned ceasefire and voicing serious concern over Israel’s renewed hostilities. He strongly condemned the actions taken.
He emphasized that military action is not a viable solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The stark contrast between 15 months of violence and 42 days of ceasefire, he argued, demonstrates that indiscriminate force does not secure the release of hostages and may, in fact, put them at greater risk.
Fu stressed that once a ceasefire agreement is established, it should be upheld in good faith and not undermined or altered. Additionally, he condemned the politicization of humanitarian aid, stating that using it as a bargaining tool violates international and humanitarian law.
He called on Israel, as the occupying power, to fulfill its legal obligations by restoring full humanitarian access to Gaza without delay. He also reaffirmed China’s support for the Gaza recovery and reconstruction initiative led by Egypt and other Arab nations, advocating for Palestinian self-governance in the rebuilding process.
Fu further warned of a growing instability in the region, highlighting the increasing disregard for international law and order, which he described as a worrisome development.
He urged the UN Security Council to take decisive action to restore stability, ensure a lasting ceasefire in Gaza, and work toward a just and comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian issue.
