Chinese envoy calls for UN action for Gaza ceasefire and slams United States for repeatedly exercising veto, weakening UNSC’s decisions.
A Chinese envoy expressed on Monday that it is unacceptable over the UN Security Council’s inaction while the Middle East, particularly Gaza, remains in a precarious situation.
China’s permanent representative to the UN, Fu Cong, highlighted during a Security Council meeting that the ongoing conflict in Gaza has been a central focus for over a year. Despite resolutions for a ceasefire, meaningful progress remains elusive.
Fu acknowledged the Council’s failure to address the Palestinian issue effectively, citing obstacles in fulfilling its responsibilities and meeting global expectations. He attributed this inaction not to internal disagreements but to a single permanent member—specifically criticizing the United States for repeatedly exercising its veto power and weakening Council decisions.
The envoy called on the Security Council to demand an immediate, unconditional ceasefire in Gaza and urged Israel to halt its military actions, including operations affecting Lebanon, Syria, and Iran. He also emphasized the importance of humanitarian aid distribution and called on Israel to adhere to international humanitarian law.
Fu underscored that reviving the two-state solution is essential for resolving the Palestinian issue and requires international backing. He proposed holding an inclusive peace conference to develop a timetable and strategy for implementing this solution.
