Chinese envoy at IAEA slams U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A Chinese envoy on Monday strongly denounced the U.S. military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, calling it an “egregious and unprecedented” action.

Li Song, China’s permanent representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), made the statement during an emergency IAEA meeting convened to address the U.S. attack on Iranian nuclear sites.

Li pointed out that the U.S., despite being a permanent member of the UN Security Council, a party to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and a recognized nuclear-weapon state, launched a military strike against a non-nuclear-weapon state’s facilities that were under IAEA safeguards.

He asserted that China strongly condemns such an action, deeming it highly inappropriate and without precedent.

Li emphasized that the U.S. strike gravely violated the UN Charter and international law, worsened tensions in the Middle East, and undermined Iran’s sovereignty and security. He expressed China’s serious concern and firm opposition to any armed attacks on safeguarded nuclear facilities.

He reiterated that negotiations and cooperation are the only viable path to resolving the Iranian nuclear issue, and urged communication and dialogue as the way to achieve lasting peace.

Li called on the international community—especially the United States—to take meaningful steps to de-escalate the situation and promote diplomatic engagement.

He also appealed to all parties involved in the conflict, particularly Israel, to halt hostilities immediately, protect civilians, and avoid further escalation.

Finally, Li reaffirmed China’s support for the IAEA’s impartial role and its contribution to a political and diplomatic resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue.
