Dr. Jielian La, a Chinese doctor, has been promoting Traditional Chinese Medicine in Pakistan for approximately 33 years. Since 1991, his Chinese Acupuncture Center and Chinese Clinical Lab have provided acupuncture services in the country.
In an interview, Dr. Jielian explained that he initially arrived in Pakistan with his medical team as part of a China-Pakistan cultural exchange program. Their goal was to establish a small clinic to introduce traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture.
He detailed that their acupuncture treatments focus on pain relief and nervous disorders, such as frozen shoulder, sciatica, and acute headaches, as well as conditions like tension, depression, and insomnia. Each session costs local patients Rs2500.
Technique of Acupuncture
Acupuncture, a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine, involves inserting thin needles into strategic points on the body. Acupuncture has gained popularity for overall wellness and stress management.
Traditional acupuncture diagnosis involves observing and questioning the patient using methods such as inspection, auscultation and olfaction, inquiry, and palpation, including examining the face, tongue, eyes, and pulse.
Dr. Jielian highlighted the importance of introducing traditional treatments to Pakistan and encouraged Chinese practitioners to promote these methods.
For training purposes, Dr. Jielian’s team has collaborated with Pakistan’s Health Services Academy to train around 15 doctors and medical professionals. Their second training course is set for October 2024, aiming to enhance the skills of Pakistani medical specialists in acupuncture.
Dr. Jielian also sees potential in Chinese herbal medicine in Pakistan, noting positive results from advanced trials. He is working to promote and import these herbal remedies. He emphasized that acupuncture is more effective than acupressure, especially for conditions like paralysis and sciatica.
Patient Muhaddisa Batool shared that her mother found relief from myalgia and shoulder issues after just two acupuncture sessions at the China Acupuncture Centre.
The Chinese Acupuncture Centre, recognized by the Health and Family Planning Commission of Gansu Province and the Gansu Provincial Hospital of TCM, is also known as the “Qi-Huang Chinese Medicine Centre of Pakistan.” It integrates Western medicine with Chinese herbal remedies.
