Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan, Yousuf Raza Gilani, emphasized that Chinese companies are significantly contributing to the national development and enhancing the business environment in Pakistan. He made these remarks during the launch of two reports, “The Glorious 11 Years—How Chinese Companies Reshaped the Power Sector in Pakistan” and “Business Climate Index of Chinese Companies in Pakistan,” organized by the China Chamber of Commerce in Pakistan on Sunday.
Gilani noted that Chinese companies are generating job opportunities, boosting local production and infrastructure, and positively impacting Pakistan’s economy. He pointed out that the rapid changes in geo-economics and geostrategic landscapes, both regionally and globally, highlight the growing significance of economic integration. He stated that Pakistan aims to enhance regional cooperation by building economic relations with partner countries, with China being a key partner.
The Senate Chairman stressed the need for deeper collaboration between Pakistan and China, indicating that Pakistan possesses significant potential for trade, investment, and joint ventures in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, agriculture, and technology. He remarked that Chinese companies bring innovative ideas, competitiveness, and a forward-thinking mindset, offering valuable lessons for Pakistani entrepreneurs and businesses. He added that the government is implementing strategies to create a favorable business climate for foreign investors and enterprises.
Regarding the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship initiative of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Gilani highlighted its critical role in transforming Pakistan’s energy and infrastructure sectors. He mentioned that the second phase of CPEC would enhance bilateral cooperation in areas like agricultural modernization, industrial development, mining and mineral exploration, as well as science, information technology, and educational and cultural collaborations to advance Pakistan’s socio-economic progress.
Ambassador Jiang Zaidong during the event
During the event, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong stated that China is prepared to collaborate with Pakistan to implement the significant agreements made by the leaders of both nations. He emphasized the importance of aligning the high-quality joint efforts of the BRI with Pakistan’s development strategies, upgrading CPEC, and collaboratively establishing a growth corridor, a livelihood corridor, an innovation corridor, a green corridor, and an open corridor.
Jiang added that China aims to promote the high-quality advancement of practical cooperation between China and Pakistan to bring real benefits to both nations, particularly for the Pakistani people. Launched in 2013, CPEC connects Gwadar Port in Balochistan, Pakistan, with Kashgar in China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, focusing initially on energy, transportation, and industrial cooperation, while the new phase will also include agriculture and livelihood initiatives.
