Chinese build hydropower plant in Nepal goes operational as it is is seen vital for energy stability.
The Sanjen Khola hydropower plant in Nepal, constructed by a Chinese firm, has officially begun operations and is now connected to the national grid, helping to ease the country’s electricity shortage.
Located in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, the 78-megawatt run-of-river project was both funded and built by China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd.
Nepal Electricity Authority Managing Director Hitendra Dev Shakya emphasized the value of the plant’s electricity output during the dry season, highlighting its contribution to meeting power demands.
At the inauguration ceremony in Kathmandu, Shakya noted that the continuous energy production from the project would support industrial areas and reduce power outages.
Wang Xin, charge d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, stated the project would not only improve the local energy mix and lower electricity expenses but also drive economic progress.
Nepal’s Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Dipak Khadka, noted the project’s timely completion amid energy shortages and during the 70th anniversary of Nepal-China diplomatic relations in 2025.
He added that such joint initiatives help deepen the bilateral relationship between Nepal and China.
