China’s NW Port in Xinjiang begins 24-hour freight operations to enhance regional connectivity and trade logistics with Central Asia as highlighted by local immigration inspection station.
The Irkeshtam port, located in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, began a trial of 24-hour freight clearance on Sunday. It is now the second land port in Xinjiang and the first in the southern part of the region to implement around-the-clock operations, aimed at boosting trade logistics with Central Asia, according to local immigration authorities.
As China’s westernmost land port, Irkeshtam plays a vital role in connecting China with Kyrgyzstan and acts as a major hub for Central and West Asian trade, driven by growing cross-border transport demand.
To enable continuous operations, the Irkeshtam immigration inspection station has adjusted its staffing through rotational shifts and adopted an “on-arrival inspection” process for freight vehicles, balancing security measures with improved efficiency.
Jiang Zhidong, head of Xinjiang Jiujiuxi International Trade Co., Ltd. based in Kashgar, noted that the 24-hour system will greatly enhance cargo handling speed, lower logistics expenses, boost port activity, and tap into greater foreign trade opportunities.
Moreover, recent data shows a sharp rise in traffic at Irkeshtam port this year, with over 105,800 personnel trips and 98,500 vehicles processed as of Sunday. This amounts to an increase of 80% and 79% respectively compared to the previous year.
