China’s combined capacity of operational and under-construction nuclear power projects has surpassed 120 million kilowatts, according to a representative from the National Energy Administration (NEA).
Zhang Xing, an NEA official, stated that China’s nuclear energy development strictly follows a “safety first” policy. He noted that China is now among the few countries with a fully developed nuclear power industry, with its technology and overall capabilities ranking among the world’s most advanced.
In 2024, China produced 450.9 billion kilowatt-hours of nuclear energy, reflecting a 3.7% increase compared to the previous year and contributing 4.5% to the nation’s total electricity output. This output also led to a significant environmental benefit by reducing the use of around 140 million tonnes of standard coal and cutting approximately 370 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, based on NEA data.
The NEA further highlighted that China’s operating nuclear reactors have consistently achieved a strong safety record, with major performance metrics aligning with top international standards.
