Tourist expenditure also climbed significantly, reaching 180.3 billion yuan (approximately 25 billion USD), marking an 8% rise and reflecting ongoing consumer momentum.
Spanning May 1 to 5, the May Day period is among China’s most active travel seasons, as millions journey for family visits, domestic sightseeing, or international travel; benefiting various sectors like transportation, tourism, and retail.
Heavy traffic, sold-out trains, and crowded scenic spots pointed to a strong revival in consumer enthusiasm within China’s economy.
Evenings remained lively, especially in Guangxi, where local authorities organized vibrant night events such as carnivals, light shows, and concerts to energize the nightlife and stimulate further spending.
According to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, national nighttime cultural and tourism zones saw nearly 76 million visits, up 5.2% from the previous year.
Holiday activities were further diversified through the use of technology, as local governments and tourism businesses enhanced the travel experience for the growing number of tourists.
In Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, an AI-based system helped tourists plan around peak traffic and crowds by analyzing real-time data from key attractions.
In Sichuan’s Qingcheng Mountain, travelers benefited from robotic exoskeletons to aid hiking and drones that delivered snacks and supplies to mountain areas.
