China’s laser technology continues to advance as stated by Ma Xinqiang, a deputy to the 14th NPC.
Ma Xinqiang, a deputy to the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC) and chairman of Huagong Technology, stated on Saturday that China has made remarkable advancements in laser technology, breaking decades of foreign dominance and securing a position among the global leaders in the field.
Laser technology plays a crucial role in manufacturing 70 percent of components in industries such as smartphones and automobiles. In the past, foreign technology restrictions posed challenges for China, but the country has focused on domestic innovation to reduce dependence on external sources. Speaking ahead of the second plenary meeting of the third session of the 14th NPC, Ma emphasized the nation’s commitment to self-reliance in this critical sector.
With continuous investment in research and development, Huagong Technology has successfully developed laser welding equipment for automotive manufacturing, ending a 40-year reliance on foreign imports. This achievement has lowered equipment costs by over 40 percent while setting a new industry benchmark—completing laser welding for a new energy vehicle body in just 43 seconds. These advancements have supported the production of 45 million domestically manufactured vehicles and contributed to over 100 specialized laser solutions for industrial applications.
According to Ma, China’s laser industry has significantly accelerated its development, achieving in just a decade what took the global industry 30 years. The country has also led the establishment of its first international laser industry standard, influencing global benchmarks. As a result, Chinese laser equipment has experienced a 35 percent annual growth rate in international markets, reshaping the global laser technology landscape. Additionally, these innovations have made high-end laser technologies more accessible to domestic manufacturers, further strengthening China’s industrial capabilities.
