China’s AI giants recruit talent at NeurIPS Conference as they plan to host various events alongside the main event in Vancouver, Canada set to take place from December 10-15.
ByteDance, Alibaba Group Holding, and Tencent Holdings are ramping up efforts to attract top global AI talent by increasing their presence at the Annual Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS), often referred to as the “Olympics of AI.”
The NeurIPS conference, scheduled from December 10 to 15 in Vancouver, Canada, will see ByteDance, Alibaba’s advertising arm Alimama, and Tencent hosting various events alongside the main sessions, as per company announcements. Alibaba, which owns the South China Morning Post, is among the firms eager to leverage the conference for recruitment.
These companies are competing fiercely to draw skilled professionals to mainland China’s rapidly growing and highly competitive AI industry. According to a McKinsey report from last year, China’s demand for AI talent is projected to reach six million individuals by 2030. However, a 2023 study by the career networking platform Maimai revealed a significant talent gap, with only two qualified candidates available for every five AI-related job openings.
ByteDance’s Doubao large language model (LLM) team, which focuses on the technology behind generative AI tools like ChatGPT, is organizing a special dinner at NeurIPS. The event will feature technical leaders and researchers sharing insights with invited AI professionals, academics, and students.
