China’s 47th Navy Fleet heads to Gulf of Aden to conduct escort mission in the region.
A new fleet of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy departed from a military port in Zhoushan, located in east China’s Zhejiang Province, on Sunday. This fleet is set to replace its predecessor in carrying out escort missions in the Gulf of Aden and the waters off Somalia.
The 47th naval fleet is comprised of a guided-missile destroyer, a missile frigate, and a supply ship. It is staffed by more than 700 officers and soldiers and is equipped with two helicopters and over 10 special forces personnel.
Before embarking on the mission, the fleet conducted intensive training exercises. These drills focused on armed rescues of hijacked merchant ships, counter-terrorism measures, anti-piracy operations, and the effective use of various weapons.
