China strongly opposes the U.S. decision to impose “reciprocal tariffs” and will take firm countermeasures to protect its interests, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce stated on Thursday.
The statement followed the U.S. announcement on Wednesday regarding new “reciprocal tariffs” on its trading partners.
The spokesperson emphasized that history has proven tariffs do not resolve U.S. economic challenges; instead, they harm American interests, disrupt global economic growth, and destabilize industrial and supply chains.
“There are no winners in a trade war, and protectionism is not a viable solution,” the spokesperson warned.
Addressing the U.S. claim of being at a disadvantage in global trade, the spokesperson argued that raising tariffs under the guise of “reciprocity” overlooks the benefits the U.S. has gained from international trade and disregards the trade balances established through years of negotiations.
The U.S. has unilaterally imposed these tariffs based on subjective assessments, violating international trade norms and harming the legitimate rights of other countries, the spokesperson said. This approach reflects unilateral coercion, and many trading partners have expressed strong opposition to it.
China urged the U.S. to immediately revoke its unilateral tariff measures and instead seek to resolve trade disputes through fair and equal dialogue.
