The China Railway Nanning Bureau Group Co Ltd reported a dramatic surge in freight volumes for China-Vietnam cross-border trains in 2024, marking an exceptional 1,153 percent year-on-year growth. A total of 19,670 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of goods were shipped from South China’s Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region.
These freight trains now reach 25 provinces, regions, and municipalities across China, transporting goods to several ASEAN countries, including Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand, thereby enhancing trade between China and the ASEAN region.
The range of goods transported by the China-Vietnam freight trains has grown significantly. What started as a service for basic construction materials and light industrial products now includes high-end electronics, precision machinery, daily necessities, and a variety of agricultural products, with 262 product categories being shipped.
Noteworthy increases in cargo volumes were seen in plate materials, mixed goods, and chemical products, with year-on-year increases of 103 times, 35 times, and 12 times, respectively.
The Nanning International Railway Port has become a key logistics hub for rail freight between China and Vietnam, handling 68 percent of heavy-duty vehicles and 84 percent of containerized goods exported from China to Vietnam by rail.
To further boost trade between China and ASEAN, the Nanning Bureau has introduced initiatives like combined road-rail transport services and “railway + railway” intermodal freight services, which consolidate goods from other regions of China for shipment to Vietnam.
Regular China-Vietnam cross-border fast Customs clearance trains operate every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, ensuring consistent transport capacity. Additional trains are added as needed, with daily operations having been established since July last year.
Li Na, business manager at Nanning Transportation Logistics Group Co Ltd, noted that using the China-Vietnam freight train service has significantly reduced shipping time for mixed goods such as furniture, home appliances, and ceramic tiles to Vietnam, while also helping expand the company’s international business.
The reliable operation of the China-Vietnam freight trains continues to support strong cross-border trade between China and ASEAN nations.
The Nanning Bureau plans to upgrade facilities at the Nanning International Railway Port and Pingxiang Railway Port Logistics Center this year, further enhancing the quality of operations and supporting better services for trade with ASEAN.
