China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, Geng Shuang, emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive and lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue, stressing that only through implementing the two-State solution can the Nakba be relegated to history.
Speaking at a UN event marking 77 years since the Nakba, Geng recalled that over half of the Palestinian population was displaced during the Arab-Israeli war. He noted that, decades later, the Palestinian people continue to endure deepening injustice as their quest for legitimate rights remains unfulfilled.
Geng condemned the humanitarian toll of the 19-month-long conflict in Gaza, citing over 53,000 Palestinian deaths and a severe crisis affecting two million people under intensified Israeli blockade and military action.
He warned that Israel’s ongoing settlement expansion in the West Bank and increasing settler violence are eroding the foundation of the two-State solution by shrinking Palestinian living space and rights.
Describing the Palestinian question as central to Middle East peace and stability, Geng urged an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and swift humanitarian relief, identifying these as crucial first steps toward sustainable peace.
He called on Israel to abide by UN resolutions, respect international law and the International Court of Justice’s decisions, end military operations, lift the Gaza blockade, halt settlement building, and prevent settler violence.
Geng urged influential powers to adopt a fair, objective stance and take concrete steps to de-escalate the conflict in Gaza and reduce tensions in the West Bank.
Reiterating China’s firm stance, he voiced support for a sovereign Palestinian state within the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, and for granting Palestine full UN membership.
He also welcomed the reconstruction initiative for Gaza led by Egypt and Arab nations, as well as the upcoming France-Saudi Arabia conference on the two-State solution, expressing hope it would renew momentum for peace.
Geng concluded by affirming China’s commitment to working with all peace-seeking nations to advance the two-State solution and achieve a just and lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue, ensuring the Nakba becomes a chapter of the past.
