China is committed to integrating traditional medicines into the global health system to benefit people worldwide.

China has once again demonstrated its leadership in global health innovation through the 2024 World Conference on Traditional Medicine, held in Beijing. At the conference, Chinese Vice-Premier Liu Guozhong highlighted China’s commitment to integrating traditional medicines into the global health system. This event, co-hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO), underscores the significance of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in addressing pressing global health challenges. By championing the synergy of traditional and modern medicines, China is offering a unique and holistic approach to healthcare that benefits people worldwide.

Traditional Chinese Medicine, refined over thousands of years, is celebrated for its emphasis on harmony, individuality, and preventative care. Vice-Premier Liu emphasized its immense potential in disease treatment and health improvement, reaffirming its role as a key component of global medical sciences. In recent decades, China has successfully integrated TCM with modern medical practices, creating a complementary system that advances health outcomes. This integration represents a sustainable and innovative model for the rest of the world, bridging ancient wisdom with cutting-edge science.

During his keynote speech, Liu Guozhong proposed three strategic measures for further embedding traditional medicines into global health frameworks. First, he called for greater self-reliance and confidence in expanding the use of traditional medicines worldwide. Second, he stressed the importance of integrating traditional and modern medical practices, ensuring that innovation remains rooted in integrity. Lastly, Liu urged international collaboration and knowledge exchange, fostering partnerships between diverse medical traditions to enrich global healthcare systems.

The conference brought together health officials, scholars, and experts from around the world, including a video address by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. This collaboration between China and WHO reflects growing international recognition of TCM’s value in addressing global health needs. By promoting a balanced and inclusive approach, China is helping to build a resilient healthcare system capable of addressing both modern and emerging health challenges.

China’s leadership in this field goes beyond theoretical discussions; it is actively working to ensure that traditional medicines play a vital role in improving global health. Through international partnerships and continued innovation, China is charting a course toward a future where traditional and modern medicines coexist and thrive. The 2024 World Conference on Traditional Medicine serves as a testament to China’s vision and dedication to enhancing healthcare for all.
