China and Spain have expressed their readiness to further deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership, as highlighted during a meeting in Madrid between Chinese Vice President Han Zheng and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Wednesday.
Han reflected on Sanchez’s recent visit to China in April. his third in three years. during which he held meaningful discussions with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang. Both nations agreed to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation, uphold free trade, and defend global fairness and justice, with Han emphasizing the crucial role of China-Spain ties in fostering global peace and development.
Marking 20 years since the launch of their comprehensive strategic partnership, Han said China is eager to use this milestone to implement the key agreements made by both nations’ leaders. He stressed the need for ongoing high-level dialogue, stronger political trust, deeper cooperation, and greater coordination in international platforms such as the United Nations and the World Trade Organization.
Given the current global uncertainties, Han called for enhanced China-Europe unity and collaboration to uphold multilateralism and free trade—moves he said are vital not just for both regions but for the overall stability of the world economy.
Han also expressed hopes that Spain would take an active role in advancing stable and constructive China-EU relations, especially as both sides mark 50 years of diplomatic ties this year.
Sanchez praised China’s steadfast support for multilateralism, particularly at a time when unilateralism and protectionism are negatively impacting global interests. He noted that no country benefits from trade wars, and reaffirmed that both Spain and the EU are committed to free trade and willing to work with China to preserve the global trade system.
He further stated that Spain upholds the one-China policy and encourages increased investment by Chinese companies in the Spanish market.
Sanchez concluded by expressing Spain’s commitment to helping enhance Europe-China relations.
