A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson emphasized on Tuesday the importance of strengthening the World Health Organization (WHO) rather than undermining it, reaffirming China’s continued support for the organization in carrying out its responsibilities.
Spokesperson Guo Jiakun made these remarks in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order issued on Monday, which announced the United States’ withdrawal from the WHO.
Guo highlighted that the WHO, as an authoritative international body in global public health, plays a key role in coordinating global health governance, which should be enhanced rather than diminished.
China remains committed to supporting the WHO, advancing international public health cooperation, improving global health governance, and fostering the development of a global health community, Guo stated.
