China ready to join Singapore for modernization: Chinese premier during a meeting with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang stated on Friday that China is prepared to collaborate with Singapore to mutually advance their modernization processes.
Li made these remarks during a meeting with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on the sidelines of the East Asia cooperation meetings in Vientiane. Li highlighted the long-standing close and high-level exchanges between China and Singapore, emphasizing the strategic discussions on issues related to their shared long-term interests. He noted that this strong foundation is a key advantage for promoting bilateral ties and expressed China’s willingness to maintain and enhance this cooperation, strengthening strategic communication and mutual support on core issues to ensure the right direction for their relationship.
Li mentioned that both nations are at crucial development stages, and next year marks the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties. China seeks to use this milestone to deepen cooperation with Singapore, leveraging their complementary strengths. He emphasized areas like advanced manufacturing, the digital economy, artificial intelligence, education, culture, and tourism as promising sectors for high-quality, forward-looking collaboration.
Li also noted China’s commitment to enhancing multilateral coordination with Singapore, promoting trade liberalization, regional economic integration, and ensuring peace and stability in Asia.
Singaporean PM Lawrence Wong response
Prime Minister Wong acknowledged the positive momentum in Singapore-China relations, with progress across various fields aligning well with their high-quality future-oriented partnership. He reaffirmed Singapore’s commitment to the one-China policy and opposition to “Taiwan independence.” Wong expressed Singapore’s readiness to continue high-level exchanges, expand cooperation in sectors like trade, the digital economy, and third-party markets, and foster people-to-people exchanges.
Wong also voiced Singapore’s support for China’s accession to agreements like the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement (DEPA). He stressed Singapore’s commitment to working with China on multilateral issues, opposing protectionism, and contributing to regional peace and prosperity.
