China raises additional tariffs to 125 percent on U.S. imports in response to U.S. raising reciprocal tariffs.
China announced on Friday that it will increase additional tariffs on U.S. imports to 125 percent starting Saturday, as per a statement from the Customs Tariff Commission of the State Council.
This move comes in response to the U.S. raising so-called “reciprocal tariffs” on Chinese goods to the same rate. The commission criticized the U.S. for imposing excessively high tariffs, stating that such actions violate international trade rules, defy economic rationale, and amount to unilateral pressure tactics.
A spokesperson from China’s Ministry of Commerce also remarked on Friday that the U.S. must bear full responsibility for its one-sided tariff actions, which have disrupted global markets, destabilized the global economy, and weakened the multilateral trading framework.
The spokesperson further noted that the U.S. decision to delay tariffs on certain countries under international pressure, including China, is largely symbolic and does not reflect a change in its coercive trade practices.
China urged the U.S. to immediately reverse its unilateral tariff policies and remove all such measures directed at Chinese goods.
According to the Tariff Commission, even steeper U.S. tariffs would be economically irrational and ultimately regarded as a misstep in the history of global economics.
The commission asserted that with current tariff levels already making U.S. imports unviable in China, any further tariff increases would be meaningless, and China would not respond.
Nevertheless, if the U.S. continues to take actions that seriously damage Chinese interests, China is prepared to implement decisive countermeasures and stand its ground.
While expressing its readiness for dialogue, China emphasized that negotiations must be based on mutual respect and not driven by threats or pressure, according to the commerce ministry spokesperson.
