China Railway launches rail transport trial for electric vehicle batteries aimed to boost exports.
China Railway has carried out its first large-scale trial to transport lithium batteries designed for electric vehicles.
On Tuesday, three trains carrying lithium batteries departed from Chongqing Municipality, Sichuan Province, and Guizhou Province in southwest China.
As the world’s leading producer of lithium batteries, this marks a significant milestone for China in transporting these batteries, which are classified as hazardous goods and were previously shipped exclusively by sea or road.
Transporting lithium batteries poses risks as they can ignite or explode if subjected to jolts.
“For the trial, specially designed containers are being used, made from non-combustible materials and equipped with smoke detectors, temperature monitors, and venting systems,” explained Jia Ping, deputy general manager of China Railway Chengdu Group Co., Ltd.
Jia highlighted that rail transport offers higher capacity compared to road transport and is faster than sea transport, enabling more efficient export of Chinese lithium batteries.
Chinese battery manufacturer CATL welcomed the trial, with Liu Jie, a logistics manager, emphasizing that this trial affirms the safety performance of domestically produced lithium batteries.
Liu further added that rail transport creates a new, efficient logistics channel, helping to reduce costs and improve export efficiency for lithium batteries.
