China, Portugal strengthen strategic, economic relations as the foreign ministers of both countries met in Beijing.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Portugal’s Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, in Beijing on Tuesday for the second China-Portugal strategic dialogue at the foreign ministers’ level.
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized the strong tradition of mutual respect and support between China and Portugal. He highlighted how both nations successfully resolved the Macao issue through diplomatic wisdom, setting a precedent for addressing historical matters through amicable consultations.
Reflecting on last year’s 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Portugal, Wang noted that leaders from both countries had exchanged congratulatory messages, recognizing the steady progress in bilateral relations. He also pointed out that this year marks two significant milestones: the 20th anniversary of the China-Portugal comprehensive strategic partnership and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the European Union (EU). Wang reaffirmed China’s commitment to working with Portugal to build a stable, productive, and dynamic partnership, further strengthening China-Europe ties based on mutual trust and shared success.
Wang stated that China’s modernization approach is centered on mutual benefit and cooperation, offering new opportunities for Portugal and other nations. He stressed the importance of expanding collaboration in various sectors and fostering cultural exchanges, particularly by utilizing Macao’s unique role as a bridge in bilateral relations.
Rangel expressed appreciation for the successful implementation of the “one country, two systems” policy in Macao. He reiterated Portugal’s commitment to China-Portugal relations and its firm adherence to the one-China policy.
He further acknowledged the significance of Chinese investment in Portugal’s economic and social development, welcoming more Chinese enterprises to invest. Portugal is eager to enhance cooperation with China in multiple sectors, including economy, trade, energy, healthcare, finance, infrastructure, and green development.
