The 4th China-Pakistan Tropical Arid Non-wood Forest Science & Technology Exchange Conference showcased academic advancements in resistant rootstocks for economic forests, as well as grafted and fodder plants. The event was attended by over 500 professionals from both countries, with sessions held simultaneously in Zhengzhou and Gwadar.
Since 2021, the Belt and Road Engineering Research Center for Tropical Arid Non-wood Forest has been fostering collaboration among experts from various institutions, including the Chinese Society of Forestry, Central South University of Forestry and Technology, University of Karachi, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, and Indus University. Their joint efforts focus on collecting germplasm resources, breeding new plant varieties, propagating improved seedlings, cultivating drought- and infertile-tolerant plants, and providing technical training. This initiative has established a tissue culture laboratory and seedling nursery in Gwadar, blending China’s advanced forestry techniques with Pakistan’s local conditions.
At the conference, researchers from both countries presented findings on topics such as grafting and cutting techniques for Eucommia ulmoides, the development of timber and non-timber forest products in Pakistan’s arid regions, propagation of medicinal and oilseed plants, heterologous biosynthesis of natural plant products, and precision water and fertilizer control systems for chestnut cultivation.
