China, Malaysia discuss trade ties, oppose U.S. tariffs as key officials from both sides conducted a virtual meeting.

Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao conducted a virtual meeting with Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Malaysia’s Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, as Malaysia currently holds the rotating ASEAN chair, according to a statement from China’s Ministry of Commerce released on Thursday.

During the meeting, both sides had detailed and open discussions about enhancing economic and trade relations between China, Malaysia, and ASEAN, as well as addressing the “reciprocal tariffs” imposed by the United States.

Wang pointed out that these tariffs disregard the delicate balance of interests that has been achieved through years of multilateral trade negotiations, noting that the U.S. has greatly benefited from global trade for a long time.

He described the U.S. actions as typical unilateral bullying, which damages the legitimate rights and interests of China and ASEAN member countries.

Wang further emphasized that the U.S. approach not only harms its own interests but also threatens global economic growth, industrial stability, and supply chains, endangering the multilateral trading system.

He asserted China’s firm opposition to such measures and mentioned that China has already implemented strong counteractions, adding that China will persist in its efforts if the U.S. continues down this path.

Wang also expressed China’s commitment to enhancing communication and collaboration with trade partners, including ASEAN, to address mutual concerns through respectful dialogue, aiming to protect the multilateral trading system.

Zafrul confirmed that Malaysia’s Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry had issued a statement opposing the U.S. policy, emphasizing that it contradicts the World Trade Organization’s principles of free and fair trade.

He expressed Malaysia’s full support for China’s position and highlighted the country’s dedication to promoting multilateralism and global trade, stating that Malaysia will consult with other ASEAN members to jointly respond to the “reciprocal tariffs” and other U.S. actions.
