China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand agree to combat cross-border crimes during an informal discussion.
China, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand held discussions on cross-border crimes during the Informal Discussion Between the Foreign Ministers in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on Friday.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that security is essential for the development of all nations. He noted that the security landscape in the region is becoming increasingly complex, with persistent cross-border crimes like online gambling and telecom fraud threatening public safety, social stability, and national reputations.
Wang stressed that only through collaborative efforts between the countries can the high occurrence of criminal activities be effectively curbed.
He highlighted that the China-proposed Global Security Initiative has received positive responses from Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand. Since last year, joint actions under this initiative have led to the arrest of over 50,000 individuals involved in gambling and fraud, he added.
Guided by the Global Security Initiative, Wang expressed China’s willingness to collaborate with other nations to intensify efforts against cross-border crimes and ensure regional security.
He urged tighter border controls, protection of national borders, securing key ports, and closing illegal border crossing routes to prevent unlawful activities.
Wang called for improved intelligence sharing and joint operations to repatriate criminals who have fled across borders and ensure they face justice promptly.
He also proposed convening a ministerial meeting on law enforcement and security cooperation in the Lancang-Mekong region to strengthen the “Safety of the Lancang-Mekong Region” initiative. This would involve pooling resources, coordinating joint operations, and enhancing transnational cooperation.
Wang further advocated for deeper exchanges and cooperation in legal and judicial fields, including joint training for law enforcement to boost crime-fighting and governance capabilities.
The four countries agreed to enhance collaboration, strengthen coordination, and increase efforts to combat cross-border crimes like online gambling, telecom fraud, drug trafficking, and human trafficking, with the goal of maintaining regional peace and stability.
