China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway set to boost connectivity and foster prosperity.
The commencement ceremony for the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway project took place on Friday in Jalalabad, Kyrgyzstan. Representatives from Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan emphasized the railway’s role in enhancing regional connectivity and fostering prosperity.
Sanjar Mukanbetov, head of Kyrgyzstan’s National Institute of Strategic Initiatives, told that the project owes its realization to the support of the leaders of China, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. He noted that local communities would benefit directly from the economic impact of the railway, which is expected to transform regional logistics and deliver substantial economic benefits.
According to the China State Railway Group Co., Ltd., construction on the Kyrgyz section of the railway is set to begin in July 2025 and will take six years to complete.
Igor Shestakov, a Kyrgyz expert, highlighted the railway’s significance as a model project for Belt and Road cooperation and its potential to boost initiatives under the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
Kyrgyz economist Iskender Sharsheev expressed optimism that the railway project would attract investments in sectors such as energy, transportation, and agriculture. He added that the infrastructure would create opportunities in logistics, product processing, and export-focused production, driving economic growth and social stability.
Abdurasul Abdukhalilov, a representative from Uzbekistan’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated that the railway would connect China with markets in Europe and the Middle East, significantly facilitating freight transportation.
Azamat Seitov, head of the Laboratory of Anthropology and Conflictology at Uzbekistan’s University of World Economy and Diplomacy, called the railway the “road of the new century.” He emphasized its potential to boost trade, tourism, and industry while enhancing regional economic integration.
