China, Japan seek strengthened mutual trust as the Foreign Minister of China and Prime Minister of Japan held a meeting in Tokyo.
China and Japan should strengthen mutual trust and cooperation to enhance stability and certainty worldwide, amid rising global complexities and international challenges, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated on Friday.
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made these remarks during his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.
Since Ishiba took office, China and Japan have resumed efforts to improve bilateral ties. Wang highlighted that a successful meeting between the Chinese leader and Ishiba in Lima, Peru, led to an agreement on advancing the strategic relationship of mutual benefit, providing a clear direction and fresh momentum for China-Japan relations.
As two influential nations, China and Japan should collaborate to shape a prosperous future for Asia, Wang emphasized.
He further stressed that as close neighbors, both countries should maintain sincerity, good faith, and harmony in their relations. Wang urged Japan to uphold the principles outlined in the four key political agreements between the two nations, particularly the China-Japan Joint Statement, and to safeguard the political and legal framework for bilateral ties. He also called on Japan to honor its political commitments on historical issues and the Taiwan question.
Marking the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Wang expressed hope that Japan would make responsible choices, sending positive signals to the world regarding history, its people, and the future.
In response, Ishiba acknowledged the significant progress in China-Japan relations, particularly following his meeting with the Chinese leader in November. He affirmed Japan’s recognition of the importance of the four political documents and its willingness to enhance exchanges and cooperation with China. Ishiba reiterated Japan’s commitment to fostering constructive and stable bilateral relations for the benefit of both nations.
