China issues white paper on energy transition underlining state’s development in energy transition.
The State Council Information Office of China released a white paper on Thursday titled “China’s Energy Transition,” highlighting the country’s significant progress and achievements in energy transition over the past decade.
The white paper, beyond its introduction and conclusion, is divided into six sections: “China’s Path of Energy Transition in the New Era,” “Promoting Green Energy Consumption,” “Accelerating the Construction of a New Energy Supply System,” “Developing High-Quality Productive Forces in the Energy Sector,” “Modernizing Energy Governance,” and “Contributing to a Global Community with a Shared Future.”
According to the white paper, over the last ten years, China has advanced its energy production and consumption methods, enhanced its energy supply under a new security strategy, and achieved significant progress in green and low-carbon energy development.
The white paper reports that China’s energy intensity has consistently decreased over the past decade, resulting in energy savings equivalent to about 1.4 billion tonnes of standard coal and a reduction of around 3 billion tonnes in carbon dioxide emissions. It also states that China has become the world’s leading investor in energy transition.
China’s energy transition, grounded in high-quality development, aims to establish a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient energy system. This system will ensure the country’s continued economic and social development while fulfilling the population’s growing demand for a better quality of life.
China’s progress in green energy development has significantly contributed to the global energy transition. Since 2013, China has accounted for over 40 percent of the annual increase in global renewable energy capacity, with more than half of the world’s newly installed capacity in 2023 being in China.
As a key proponent of global energy transition, China is committed to collaborating with the international community to plan energy cooperation, combat global climate change, promote harmony between humanity and nature, and work toward creating a cleaner, more beautiful world for all.
