China issues guidelines to ramp up green transition setting clear objectives for future.
On Sunday, the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council introduced new guidelines aimed at accelerating the green transition across all economic and social development sectors.
The guidelines set clear objectives, targeting significant progress in the green transition by 2030 and establishing a green, low-carbon, and circular development path by 2035.
The guidelines outline various tasks, including optimizing regional development and protection, advancing green and low-carbon transitions in the energy, transportation, and industrial sectors, and enhancing urban-rural development. Further, these tasks focus on five key areas with three main links: improving energy resource efficiency, encouraging green consumption and lifestyles, and driving technological and scientific innovations.
Quantitative targets have also been set. By 2030, the energy conservation and environmental protection industry is expected to reach approximately 15 trillion yuan ($2.1 trillion), non-fossil energy consumption should make up around 25 percent of total energy use, and pumped storage hydropower capacity should exceed 120 million kilowatts.
Additionally, by 2030, the carbon emission intensity of commercial transport is projected to decrease by about 9.5 percent from 2020 levels, and the annual handling of bulk solid waste is expected to reach around 4.5 billion tonnes. The output rate of main resources is also aimed to increase by about 45 percent compared to 2020.
