China, Indonesia to deepen ties, honor Bandung Spirit as Premier Li Qiang makes an official visit to Indonesia.
During Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s ongoing visit to Indonesia, both nations emphasized the enduring relevance of the Bandung Spirit and committed to enhancing bilateral ties and strategic coordination.
Premier Li, in discussions with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, stated that China is willing to collaborate with Indonesia and other developing nations to uphold the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and carry forward the Bandung Spirit.
The 1955 Bandung Conference, hosted in Indonesia, brought together 29 Asian and African countries to promote solidarity, friendship, and cooperation, marking a pivotal moment for what is now called the Global South.
Speaking to business leaders on Saturday, Li remarked that the world is once again facing serious challenges, with unilateralism, protectionism, and coercive practices on the rise—making the Bandung Spirit more relevant than ever.
Shortly after arriving in Indonesia on Saturday, Li and Prabowo visited an exhibition commemorating the 70th anniversary of the historic Bandung Conference.
During his visit, Li encouraged both countries to expand cooperation, deepen industrial integration, and defend free trade, aiming to strengthen their economic partnership.
In his meeting with President Prabowo, Li expressed China’s readiness to align development strategies with Indonesia, improve Belt and Road cooperation, and enhance flagship projects like the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway.
He also emphasized the need for both countries to boost trade, enhance industrial collaboration, and expand partnerships in finance, green energy, digital technology, artificial intelligence, aerospace, and marine sectors.
President Prabowo noted that 2025 will mark both the 75th anniversary of China-Indonesia diplomatic relations and the 70th anniversary of the Bandung Conference. He expressed Indonesia’s desire to use this opportunity to deepen its strategic ties with China and promote regional and global peace and development.
Prabowo further stated Indonesia’s interest in advancing collaboration with China across agriculture, finance, infrastructure, green economy, AI, and education, while also encouraging more Chinese investment in the country.
The two leaders oversaw the signing of several agreements related to economic policy, industrial and supply chain cooperation, and financial collaboration.
Premier Li also met with Puan Maharani, Speaker of Indonesia’s House of Representatives, affirming that Indonesia remains a diplomatic priority for China and expressing China’s intent to strengthen comprehensive strategic cooperation.
Experts in Jakarta praised the visit, viewing it as a testament to the deepening China-Indonesia relationship and shared ambitions in regional and global affairs.
Muhammad Syaroni Rofii, an international relations expert from the University of Indonesia, said Premier Li’s visit reflects the expanding strategic partnership between the two countries and highlights their increasing coordination on economic and political matters.
Premier Li arrived in Jakarta on Saturday and is set to depart for Malaysia on Monday to attend the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit in Kuala Lumpur.
