China highlights U.S. request behind upcoming economic talks clarifying that China will not back down on its core principles.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington clarified that the upcoming economic and trade discussions between China and the U.S. in Switzerland are being held at America’s request, emphasizing that China will not compromise its core principles just to finalize a deal.
According to an embassy spokesperson, the U.S. has recently made repeated efforts to communicate with China through different channels, expressing a desire to address issues such as tariffs. After thoroughly assessing the outreach, China agreed to participate in the talks, which were initiated by the U.S.
The embassy expressed firm opposition to U.S.-imposed tariffs, asserting that China will firmly safeguard its lawful rights and interests, support global fairness and justice, and uphold the regulations of the World Trade Organization and the broader multilateral trading framework.
The embassy reiterated that it was the United States that started the tariff conflict, and called on Washington to abandon its tactics of threats and coercion.
The spokesperson stressed that if the U.S. genuinely aims to resolve trade disputes through dialogue, it must cease its threatening posture and negotiate with China based on equality, mutual respect, and shared benefits.
Reaffirming China’s stance, the spokesperson concluded that Beijing will not tolerate inconsistency between U.S. statements and actions, nor will it compromise its principles or the ideals of global justice just to strike a deal.
